SIYATHEMABA - Competition Entry, Somkhele, South Africa, 2005
In response to the requirements for a combined football and HIV/Aids education and treatment facility, a large community-built earth mound is proposed. Using locally-sourced tyres and excess earth from levelling the pitch a variety of viewing conditions are provided for football matches, small educational plays, larger musical performances and intimate group discussions, all enabling the complex process of reaching out to the local community. Flexibility is introduced by simple and robust building components made from tyres, stabilised-earth and corrugated-steel sheets.
